Raja Farooq elected new AJK PM

MUZAFFARABAD: Raja Farooq Haider of the Muslim Conference has been elected the new prime minister of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly after beating out his rival and former premier Sardar Yaqoob.

Haider won by a ten vote lead securing 29 votes as opposed to Sardar Yaqoob's 19.

The voting took place Thursday. The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was meant to consist of 49 members but one seat is vacant due to the recent death of a minister.

As per the constitution, any candidate with 25 legislative votes can run for prime minister.

Sardar Yaqoob was supported by a tri-party alliance whereas Raja Farooq enjoyed the support of the Muslim Conference which is 29 members strong.

The Muslim Conference was in a clear majority so the odds were strongly in Raja Farooq’s favour.
