Strike observed against government failures in reconstruction

Rawalakot, Jammu and Kashmir, October 08, 2009:On the call of civil society organizations complete strike was observed on Wednesday in Rawalakot and its suburb to protest against the policies of government on reconstruction of areas which were hit by the devastating earthquake of October 08, 2005. Like other parts of the country people paid tribute to the martyrs of devastating earth of October 08, 2005. Different commemoration gatherings were held in various parts of the city to pay homage to the victims of tragic incident. A large procession rally was carried out jointly under the auspices of local civil society networks Press For Peace (PFP) , Action Aid and Poonch Development Forum(PDF), and . The rally started from Main Bazaar and turned into a large gathering in the District court complex. A large number of traders, political workers, students and lawyers and members of NGOs attended the event. A considerable number of school children also joined the rally and protested against the delaying of reconstruction of their school buildings which were damaged in four year ago tremor. The participants were chanting slogans against the anti public policies of government and demanded the trial of those responsible for delaying in the reconstruction work. The rally was addressed by Sardar Qadeer, Chairman PDF, Sardar Basheer, Khawaja Khalil,Sardar Liaqaat and others office bearers of local political parties and NGOs. Addressing the procession the speakers criticized the government for alleged corruption in the reconstruction work. They urged government to start the rehabilitation work on City Development Plans which aim the provision of all basic facilities to the citizens of major cities of quake hit areas.
