Washington 26 July 2009: Kashmir continues to be a nuclear flashpoint in South-Asia, periodic eruptions will continue to risk the nuclear neighbors and violence will continue to chase the region unless the Kashmir problem is resolved to the wishes of the people of the state emerged as the theme song on the second -day of the tenth international conference organized jointly by the and Kashmiri American Council/Kashmir Center and Association of Humanitarian Lawyers at Capitol Hill Washington.
Most of the presentations made in the conference expressed their concern at the depressing and dismal humanitarian situation in the state and equally hailed the resoluteness of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in carrying forward their struggle for pursuing their cherished goal of freedom. The militarization of the state was debated and discussed in the conference. Some of the speakers spoke in detail as to how over-militarization not only had worsened psycho-traumatic situation but it was taking a toll of the state economy and agriculture and production of the state by converting more and more areas into cantonments.
Those who made their presentations on the second on varied subjects like Kashmir Dispute: Peoples Aspirations, Innovative Models and Fresh Options, When Peace Process Fails What Next, CBM’s Between India and Pakistan – Impact on Kashmir and Kashmir A Way Forward included Ms. Karen Parker, Ms. Victoria Schofield, Ms. Rizwana Abbasi, Dr. Idrisa Pandit, Dr. Angana Chatterji, Ambassador Maleeh Lodhi, Mr. David Wolfe, Mr. Tod Shea, Mr. Tapan Bose, Mr. Gautum Navlakhi, Pandit Jitender Bakshi, Mr. Ved Bhasin, Mr. M. Ismail Khan, Senator Mushaid Hussain, Ambassador M.Yusuf Buch, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Mir, Mr. Zahid Muhammad, Prof. Faizanul Haq, Prof. G.R. Malik, Prof. Bishnu Podal, Prof. Wasiullah Khan, Mr. Mohammad Saleem Bhat, Sardar Siddique, Sardar Sarwar Khan, Mr. Malik Nadeem Abid, Mr. Sardar Ayaz Sidiq, Mr. Altaf Qadri, Raja Zulqarnain Khan.
In his concluding remarks Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Executive Director Kashmiri American Council described the conference as a great success for it having looked at all the dimension of this one of the oldest and festering problem that not only has been cause of suffering for the people of the state but cause of perennial tension for 1.2 billion people living in the region. He called upon the international community more particularly the US Administration to play its role for the resolution of the Kashmir problem on the basis of fair play and justice in accordance with the aspiration of people of Jammu and Kashmir.
