Islamabad, Jan 5: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has described the Kashmir stand-off as the most important issue in South Asia, Geo TV reported. Addressing a joint press conference with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani here in Islamabad, he urged Pakistan to cooperate with India in its probe into the Mumbai attacks.
“Ban described the Kashmir stand-off as the most important issue of South Asia and also appreciated Pakistan’s role in the war on terror,” the report said. “In a meeting with Prime Minister Gilani I had asked for maintaining and strengthening the rapprochement between India and Pakistan that has taken its own momentum during the last several years as the regional cooperation will pave a new era of cooperation, a peaceful co-existence and socioeconomic transformation in South Asia,” Ban said.
The UN secretary-general arrived here on Wednesday on a day-long visit to Pakistan. He said the international community wants both the countries be engaged in composite dialogue, which will result in better relationship, including solving the long-pending issues, including the Kashmir dispute. “All these issues should be addressed peacefully through dialogue,” he added.
Earlier, in his opening statement, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which is the subject of several UN resolutions, awaits a final settlement in accordance with legitimate aspirations of the Kashmir people. “We will continue to extend our full support to the secretary-general and to the United Nations in their efforts to strengthen international peace and security on the basis of universally recognised principles and international laws, and promoting socioeconomic progress in the developing world,” he added.
