Muslim leaders in India-controlled Kashmir dispute court verdict on beard

SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, April 3 – Muslims leaders in India-controlled Kashmir Friday strongly disputed a verdict by the Indian Supreme Court dismissing a student's petition seeking permission to sport a beard while attending school.

The local Muslim leaders accused the apex court of India of interference into the religious affairs of Muslims and feared that the verdict may be used to harass Muslims.

A senior Muslim Scholar, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, described the court's decision as an indication that India was fast being converted into a homogenous Hindu nation.

Supreme Court of India has rejected a plea of a Muslim student seeking permission that he be allowed to sport a beard to his school.

The court judge, Markandeya Katju, said growing a beard was similar to promoting "Talibanization" in the country.

Muhammad Salim, 16, of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, central India, had asserted that sporting a beard was a part of his religious identity.

He had challenged Nirmala Convent Higher Secondary School's policy requiring male students to be clean-shaven.
