Srinagar, Feb 18, KONS: Nearly 14,000 jobless youth took part in the army’s recruitment drive in Baramulla today, a large number of aspirants from different parts of the district had to spend the night in mosques because of not finding any other accommodation.
The army formally kicked off its recruitment drive in Kashmir from the Baramulla district, reportedly drawing an overwhelming response, reports said.
The army’s deputy director general for recruitments in Jammu and Kashmir and the Punjab, K.D. Malhotra told the KNS that he was highly pleased with the response as it indicated that the youth here were keen to serve the nation.
He said that the Indian army was a disciplined force, and apart from defending the borders, did not shirk from any sacrifice to protect the life and the property of the people.
“Recruitments in the army are not made in lieu of money, but on the basis of merit,” he said. He said that the Baramulla drive had drawn 14,000 aspirants and assured that selections would be made on the basis of merit.
The drive would be taken to the Jammu and Ladakh divisions soon, he said. Malhotra said that for the time being the army had fixed class 10 and graduation as the qualification required for recruitment, and this had increased the possibility of a maximum number of recruitments. “There is absolutely no room for irregularities in the selection process,” he said.
A youth, who was among the massive numbers reporting for the drive, said that people had no choice but to take recourse to the army following the government’s failure to provide employment. “The government does not give jobs. So something has to be done to earn a living, as our parents have spent heavily on our education,” he said.
