man injured in a protest over the alleged rape and murder of
two Muslim women triggered fresh demonstrations in Indian
Kashmir on Thursday, in which at least 40 people were injured,
police and witnesses said.
Nisar Ahmad was hit on the head by a teargas shell fired by
police during a protest early this week in Srinagar, summer
capital of Jammu and Kashmir where regular protests since last
year have given a new life to a separatist movement.
Residents say the two women, aged 17 and 22, were abducted,
raped and killed by security forces on Friday in Shopian town,
60 km (37 miles) south of Srinagar. Authorities say they
drowned.
Ahmad, 30, died in hospital, and soon thousands of people
poured into the streets to protest his death.
"Indian forces go back, we want freedom," shouted angry
protesters, carrying Ahmad's body wrapped in a white and green
shroud. At least 40 people were injured as the protesters
clashed with police.
Indian security forces fighting separatist militants in
Jammu and Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state, have
been accused in the past of human rights violations, including
rape and extrajudicial killings.
Authorities deny any systematic violations and say all
reports are investigated and the guilty punished.
