London :( PFP report) March 14, 2009
Media watchdog, Press for Peace (PFP) has condemned shutdown of transmissions of Pakistani TV channels and called upon authorities to lift sanctions against media for the prevalence of free flow of information in the society.
“The shut down of Pakistan TV channels Geo TV and AAJ by a democratic government is regrettable and absolutely contrary to the spirit of freedom of expression”, media watchdog Press for Peace (PFP) observed here on Saturday.
The organization demanded of the government to immediately lift ban on the transmission of the Geo News and give complete freedom to media in the country.
It said that rather than giving protection to media persons in its conflict areas, the present government in Pakistan was targeting media outlets by imposing undemocratic measures.
“We continue to monitor the situation of Pakistani media landscape and other international human rights networks would be mobilized to expert pressure on Pakistani authorities to ensure rule of law and freedom of expression”, it further said.
The PFP also condemned the arrests of lawyers, political activists and members of civil society organizations during the ongoing ‘long march’ in the country and asked government of Pakistan to immediacy release political activists.
